How long laser cleaning takes — and what actually drives the price

Laser cleaning is priced by time, not by square metre — because the same square metre can take four minutes or forty depending on what is on it. Understanding the handful of variables behind that spread makes it much easier to read a quote and to plan a project sensibly.

1. Contamination depth

This is the single biggest variable. Light surface bloom and flash rust often clear in one pass, and a flat panel can move quickly. Heavy scale, thick multi-layer paint or old bituminous underseal needs several passes and can be five to ten times slower over the same area. Two gates of identical size can genuinely differ by half a day.

2. Geometry and detail

The laser scans a line across the surface, so flat, open panels are efficient. Ornate scrollwork, railing spindles, lattice, fasteners and internal corners all require repositioning and angled passes. As a rule of thumb, a heavily detailed ornamental gate takes roughly twice as long as a plain one of the same footprint.

3. Material and finish requirements

Steel and iron respond predictably. Aluminium, galvanised finishes, marble and polished stone need lower, carefully tested settings and test patches first — safer, but slower. Where the goal is selective removal (taking off rust but keeping original paint alongside it) the work rate drops again, because precision beats speed.

4. Access and setup

Mobile work includes travel, power setup, masking of surrounding areas, safety zoning and fume extraction. On a short job this fixed overhead can be a meaningful share of the total, which is why several small items cleaned in one visit almost always costs less than the same items across separate visits.

5. What happens next

Cleaned bare metal will flash-rust if it is left exposed in damp conditions, so coating should follow closely. If you want primer or a protective coating applied as part of the visit, that adds time — but it is usually cheaper than a second mobilisation.

Costs people forget to compare

Comparing laser cleaning against blasting or chemical stripping on hourly rate alone misses the surrounding costs. Abrasive blasting generates spent media that has to be contained and disposed of — commonly several kilograms of waste per square metre treated — plus sheeting, cleanup and, at a home address, the risk of grit in gravel, drains and neighbouring cars. Chemical stripping brings containment, neutralising and disposal of hazardous liquid. Laser work produces a small volume of fine dust captured at the extraction unit, and no wet or granular waste stream at all.

How to get an accurate quote quickly

  • Two or three photos: one wide, one close-up of the worst area
  • Rough dimensions of the item or area
  • What the surface is made of, if you know
  • Whether anything nearby must be preserved — paint, glass, seals, brickwork
  • Your postcode and whether there is parking and access at the item
